Description
MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c) represents a new class of peptides. Unlike most hormones which are encoded in the nuclear DNA, MOTS-c is encoded in the DNA of the mitochondria itself.
Mechanism of Action
-
AMPK Activation: Research suggests MOTS-c translocates to the nucleus in response to metabolic stress, where it regulates adaptive responses similar to those seen in exercise.
-
Glucose Regulation: Studies in mice have shown it to improve insulin sensitivity and prevent diet-induced obesity.
-
Metabolic Flexibility: It is often studied as an “exercise mimetic” for its ability to enhance cellular energy metabolism.
